Texas camping experience

I made it to Texas today. I followed the signs for camping and ended up at a large piece of forest that was designated for camping. It was completely empty and beautiful. I felt vulnerable and didn’t want to be seen, so I rode my bike back behind some trees and saplings. The moon and stars were out, and I was enjoying the crisp air.

I could see a car coming along the road through the forest. Of all the places in the forest, they pull off the road with their headlights pointed at me. Then, they turned off their car and sat in it. My first thought was that they knew that I was there, and I became somewhat nervous. As a little time passed, I realized that they had no idea that I was there. I decided that I would move on when I could, so I packed up while I was waiting for them to leave, which they did.

Of course, I was also praying for protection and guidance. I don’t like camping alone, unless I’m really alone and far away from civilization. So that is how I ended up in the Crystal Inn & Suites.

  1. The same thing happened to me years ago. I was in my sleeping bag at the foot of a wooded embankment off a highway, when some drunk guys appeared at the top of the embankment. Fortunately, they didn't see me. The dumped a bunch of beer cans down the embankment and left. Whew!

  2. I understand, Jamal! I once backtracked and went to a more populated area looking for a camping spot in NC. A Deputy Sheriff pulled me over and gave me the creeps as he asked me why I was driving out there. Was a few miles down a dirt road, and decided to head back to where I had camped the night before. - Joyce
